|Michael has been a performance
designer for over 20 years. His work features a long collaboration with
director Andrew Manley including three British Premieres of adaptations
of Chekhov plays by David Mamet, and in opera an infamous Marriage of
Figaro for the Welsh National Opera. In 1991 he became the first person
in the UK to receive an MA in the subject of Theatre Design and has been
Course Director of the BA Theatre: Design for Performance programme at
Central Saint Martins for the past 8 years.
He completed a research project, Performance Through Design during a six month sabbatical in the US in 2002 based at Ohio University. Recently, as Secretary of the Associated Courses in Theatre Design (ACTD), he was a catalyst for the first national teaching conference on the future of teaching in the ‘design for performance’ sector: The Next Stage, held in Nottingham in September 2004.
With his colleague Peter Bond, he constitutes The Split Second research group, looking at interdisciplinary practice within the field and its pedagogic application.
